It was perfect in Seattle this weekend.

74 degrees, a warm breeze and not a cloud in the sky. Come Sunday afternoon it was feeling more like the middle of Summer than Spring. Justin and I stopped at the market to grab dinner fixings and decided a light salad seemed on par for the warm weather.

Cold Crab and Grapefruit  Salad on Baby Greens with Bleu Cheese, Toasted Almonds and a Lemon Champagne Vinaigrette.

Five And Spice

When you think about it, it’s remarkable, really, just how many opportunities we have every day to do something new.  Much of the time it doesn’t feel like it.  Our days follow patterns.  We have baskets full of habits and well-worn ruts that we comfortably cruise along in.

And actually, a certain amount of repetition and stability in your life turns out to be really important and healthy.  Which makes perfect sense.  Nature is full of rhythms and patterns.  We reside within them, and if completely rhythmless we feel jostled and jarred and seriously uncomfortable.

But if we don’t keep our eyes open to all the myriad of tiny dips and swerves within the patterns, it can be easy to feel trapped in some sort of mold that looks a lot like same-old-same-old.

I forget sometimes, that I’m the one making the decision to walk down the exact same…

Awwwwww!!!! I don’t care if it’s childish, I love it.

At first, my eyes almost popped out when I first saw that. I mean, who in the right frame of mind would go to all that trouble! Look at the sheer amount of detail! The bow, the whiskers… sheesh!

Then I read on and realised that anyone could do it… with the right equipment, and a shitload of patience!

And the reason is you…

Spaghetti tossed in garlic butter and olive oil,
blanched asparagus, chicken in black pepper sauce,
2 sunny-side up eggs and parmesan cheese to sprinkle.

I woke up, rubbed my eyes groggily, and was greeted by this bento.

It took me a few minutes to register what was in front of me. Now, I’m not a morning person. In fact, quite the opposite. I’m just about the most cranky person in the world when I’m robbed of my sleep. I need at least a solid 8 hours of sleep every night in order to function as a decent human being the next day.

I squealed with delight and almost burst into tears, which scared the living shit out of my hubby. Seeing the amount of effort he took to make the eggs just perfect, and cut them out into a heart shape… I was absolutely speechless. I love bentos and he’s seen me pouring over bento blogs in the weekends, marvelling at other people’s creativity, and drooling over their lunches. Well, he gave me my very own special bento!

Times like these, I feel like the luckiest girl on earth.
